We kicked the season off on Saturday with a fine performance against Cricklade Town resulting in a 3-0 win. For a number of the starting 11,it was their first time playing senior football and it took while for us to get to grips with the pace of the game, that coupled with the physical and aggressive nature of Cricklade meant that for the opening 20 minutes we were on the back foot.
However as the half wore on we can began to take hold of the game and as we began to move the ball round freely our opponents began to struggle and spent large parts of the half chasing the ball. We were unlucky not to go into the break 1-0 up after a surging run by Dan Sandford found Alex Pippard whose first time shot wasn't far off target. The message at halftime was simple keep doing what we've been doing and we'll get the break through.
Cricklade started the 2nd half strongly and created chances as we soaked up a sustained period of pressure but like the 1st half we began to grow into the half. The break through came on 70 minutes when Alex Pippard was bundled over in the box, up stepped Josh Hard who calmly placed his spot kick to the keepers left as he went right. Shortly after Cricklade were reduced to 10 men, Josh hard was brought down on the edge of the area, his resulting free kick struck the bar. With 10 minutes to go Alex Pippard pounced on an error by the centre back and calmly rounded the keeper before slotting home to double the lead. The victory was rounded off by Pippard who completed the scoring from close range following fine work by Ben Howlett. It was a great start against a very strong side but we must remain grounded and know that it's only the first game of a very long season.
